FIFA crisis deepens as more officials arrested in corruption scandal

Date:

The corruption scandal surrounding the world soccer governing body, FIFA, unraveled further on Thursday, as several football officials were arrested in a fresh raid conducted by the Swiss authorities as part of an investigation.

Many of the arrests on Thursday were made at the same luxury hotel in Zurich raided by authorities in May, Sport24 reported.

According to reports, newly arrested officials are mostly from South and Central America who are allegedly involved in money laundering, racketeering and fraud.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter and his UEFA counterpart Michel Platini are currently facing a 90-day suspension over claims that the latter had received a ‘disloyal payment’ of 1.35 million pounds from the outgoing president in 2011.
