Saddi Dilli breaks into Asia’s top 10 cities

Date:

A leading travel magazine has put India’s capital, New Delhi among the top 10 best cities in Asia.

Delhi is the only Indian city to make the top 10 in the Asian survey by Travel+ Leisure. Japan’s Kyoto was ranked number one in the survey.

Delhi “struck readers with its extremes—the juxtaposition of urban sprawl next to dense green spaces, as well as rich next to poor,” the publication says.

The website’s write-up on New Delhi included these comments:

“Keeping with those extremes, you can enjoy a sumptuous pan-Asian meal surrounded by murals and antiques at the Spice Route in the Hotel Imperial, or the much-beloved thalis at Andhra Bhavan, set in a state house, for roughly $3 a person. The city also made Asia’s top 10 for shopping: to explore some authentic markets, check out the dizzying bridal wear in Shahpur Jat, or take home one of the keep-forever dupatta scarves from the market in Lajpat Nagar.”

As part of the magazine’s survey, readers also ranked the most popular cities, just within Asia, for qualities like their arts scenes, bars, shopping, good value, and romantic potential.

Here is the complete list:

10. New Delhi

9. Ho Chi Minh City

8. Shanghai

7. Hanoi

6. Singapore

5. Hong Kong

4. Tokyo

3. Bangkok

2. Siem Reap

1. Kyoto
