India-Africa Summit: Roads you should avoid

Date:

In a bid to save commuters from traffic congestion, Delhi Police have urged commuters to avoid certain roads on Wednesday and Thursday, when the capital welcomes representatives of 54 African nations, who will participate in the India-Africa summit.

“We have put together a very detailed and elaborate traffic advisory which, if followed, will inconvenience commuters the least on October 28 and 29. There are e-maps of the advisory available for download on our website,” Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Muktesh Chander was quoted as saying by Indian Express.

“We will also publish SMSes and advertisements in newspapers about the roads to be avoided. Commuters can also call our helpline number at 109,” he added.

Traffic flow in Lutyens’ zone, central Delhi, Mathura Road, Rajghat, ITO and areas around India Gate is expected to be disrupted in view of frequent VVIP route arrangements.

To avoid the C-Hexagon near India Gate, which can be blocked for VVIP movements, commuters heading towards ITO or Kashmere Gate from South Delhi may take the Ring Road till Ashram and then move east towards Akshardham temple.

They can return to their route through Geeta Colony or Wazirabad and continue their journey northwards. Similarly, vehicles from Kashmere Gate and Civil Lines might take the Rani Jhansi Road, Karol Bagh route to reach south Delhi and avoid congestion.

Large parts of Lutyens’ zone and central Delhi shall be temporarily turned into restricted zones, in view of security, and only labelled vehicles of the invitees and vehicles of bona fide residents of the areas under restriction will be allowed inside during the four-day summit, the official said.

On Wednesday, between 5.30 pm and 10 pm, several roads — including Sardar Patel Marg, Teen Murti, Akbar Road, Tees January Marg, Rajesh Pilot Marg, Subramaniam Bharti Marg, Mathura Road and Bhairon Road — will be closed.

Traffic will be restricted on certain stretches on October 29 as well. Sardar Patel Marg, Teen Murti Marg, Akbar Road, Tees January Marg, Rajesh Pilot Marg, Subrahmaniam Bharti Marg, Mathura Road, Bhairon Road, Ring Road (between Bhairon Marg and Raj Ghat) and Power House Road leading to Indira Gandhi Stadium will be closed for commuters from 8.30 am to 10.30 am and from 4 pm to 8 pm.
