AR Rahman cancels Delhi show after fatwa

Date:

A R Rahman has always been the kind who would never feature on a controversial list. He works most of the time and when he isn’t busy making mesmerising music, he prefers to keep it low key. Never once has he spoken ill about anyone, nor has anyone done the same to him. So, basically, it’s a clean slate.

So, when the same guy cancelled a show supposed to be held in Delhi, we were surprised. Why did he do that. For those who missed out on this bit of news, a Mumbai-based Sunni Muslim group recently issued a fatwa against Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi (of Children Of Heaven fame) and Rahman for the film Muhammad: Messenger Of God.

Ever since that, not just has AR Rahman not commented, but has also stayed away from public glance. Sources close to the music composer say that he cancelled the show in the last minute to avoid being bombarded with questions about the fatwa.

However, a member of AR Rahman’s team said, “We had to cancel our visit to Delhi owing to Rahman’s work commitments. He is travelling to Europe for work and could not be in Delhi. We are not releasing any official statement on this so far.”
