TMC worker shot dead in Bardhaman

Kolkata: A Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker on Saturday was shot dead in front of a polling booth in the Katwa municipality Ward no 14 of the Bardhaman district in West Bengal during the ongoing municipal corporation elections in the state.

The TMC worker, named Indrajeet Singh was shot dead on the spot whereas another TMC leader has been hospitalised after suffering bullet injuries.

TMC has reportedly accused a Congress supporter for the murder. The body has been sent to the Katwa subdivisional hospital for an autopsy.

Polling is being held in 8,756 polling stations in West Bengal, of which 2,318 have been identified as sensitive and 2,142 as hyper sensitive.

“A total of 35 companies of central forces, besides state forces have been deployed to ensure peaceful polling,” State Election Commissioner S R Upadhyay had said earlier.

Altogether 91 observers and four special observers are directly monitoring the entire polling process, besides a number of micro-observers are also placed in sensitive polling stations.

Nearly 74 lakh people will cast their votes, while a total of 7636 candidates will try their luck at the hustings.
