Is the game over for CSK?

Date:

New Delhi: Supreme Court on Thursday observed that Chennai Super Kings should be “terminated without further enquiry” from the Indian Premier League because one of its officials Gurunath Meiyappan has been indicted for betting by an inquiry committee. Meiyappan is the son-in-law of suspended BCCI president N Srinivasan.

Srinivasan is himself facing questions on conflict of interest. The court wanted to know exact share holding pattern of India Cements, the owners of CSK. Srinivasan is the Managing Director of India Cements.

Earlier this week, a bench of justices T S Thakur and F M I Kalifulla said, “The finding of the Mudgal Committee can result in suspension of the team. If Meiyappan fits in as an official of CSK, there is the consequence of its suspension.”

In a major blow to N Srinivasan, the court’s observation states that he must step aside from contesting BCCI elections and also suggested that they proceed with the elections at the earliest. SC also sought details of the ownership of India Cements.

By doing so, the court wanted to find out the exact ownership details of the CSK.

The apex court has questioned the BCCI President-in-exile about equity held by him and his family in India Cements who own the CSK franchise in the IPL. The SC has requested a written reply from Srinivasan in the IPL case. For the first time, the BCCI admitted that Gurunath Meiyappan was a CSK offcial.
