Losses count too for Monfils

Date:

You can always expect the unexpected from fiery Frenchman Gael Monfils.

He rated his 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 demolition of Roger Federer in the Davis Cup final as one the three biggest matches he had played in during his career.

That was understandable, but when asked to elaborate on what the two other standouts were he gave a characteristically offbeat reply.

“The first time I beat my father. It’s bizarre, but my very best match is a match I lost. It was in 2004 against Lleyton Hewitt in Bercy (Paris).

“I had lost 6-3, 7-6. But for me it’s the best match of my career because of the memory of it, because of the atmosphere.

“Of course, my level of tennis was not as good as today, but it’s really my best memory.”

Maybe a five-set win over Stan Wawrinka on Sunday to capture the Davis Cup for France might change the picture, but you never know with Monfils.
