National Geographic coming to Indian schools

Date:

New Delhi: National Geographic explorer launched its special edition magazines to bring in comprehensive learning to India’s school children.

The inauguration at the American Centre in the Capital, on Tuesday, saw the US ambassador Kathleen Stephens unveil the edition with Vice-President and Publisher of National Geographic Learning, Francis Downey.

Kathleen Stephens spoke of her love for National Geographic and how it helped her, a girl from western America, leave her town and go into the big city which had diverse cultures. She spoke of how people need to be informed about the things around them, and the rest of the world.

Stephens also dwelled into the realms of diplomacy, taking the chance to speak of the “deep friendship between India and the US”. She spoke of Secretary of State John Kerry’s visit next week which they hope would see the bilateral relations move forward.

The National Geographic society which was formed 126 years ago is aiming to engage students and teach them in greater depth than possible through a textbook.

Francis Downey said National Geographic Learning is targeting teachers as well as students in both government and private schools in India. The organisation is in talks with CBSE to tie in the magazine with the boards curriculum.

Downey added they were hopeful of Indian scientists and researchers reaching out to them for grants to carry out studies.
