Wang-Sushma talks on optimistic note

Date:

New Delhi: The first round of bilateral talks between India and China after the Narendra Modi government took charge began on Sunday with the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi calling upon Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in New Delhi.

Several outstanding issues including the boundary issue, stapled visas, as well as India’s support to Tibetan refugees and the Dalai Lama are on agenda for the talks. The two leaders are also likely to discuss trade between the two countries.

The Chinese Foreign Minister will meet Prime Minister Modi as well as President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday.

This is the first contact between the two governments after the Indian general election while Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has already spoken to Modi over phone soon after he was sworn in.

During his visit, Wang will meet leading Indian officials and will have in-depth exchanges on how to push forward bilateral relations, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said.
