Hard talk during Modi-Sharif meet

Date:

New Delhi: The most talked about meet between the two Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif saw discussions on 26/11 and the issue of terror as a whole. During the 50-minute meeting Modi also brought up the attack of the Indian consulate in Herat, Afghanistan.

The five points discussed: Modi to Sharif

  • Terror attacks must end
  • 26/11 trial unsatisfactory
  • No action taken against perpetrators of 26/11
  • Regional cooperation needed against terror
  • 26/11 voice samples demanded

In a press statement Nawaz Sharif said the meeting with Narendra Modi was a historic one. Sharif said it marked the beginning of a new page in relations adding that he wants to overcome the legacy of mistrust.

The Pak Prime Minister had also said how we wanted to pick up talks from 1999 when then BJP leader and Prime Minister was Atal Bihari Vajpayee whom he later called on after the meeting with Modi.

Modi made headlines when he shattered polling with a historic win of his party, and then again with his invitation to SAARC leaders, including the vital neighbour Pakistan. The country took its time to respond but when it did, they acknowledged the gravity of the meet and its significance.

Before leaving his country, Nawaz Sharif told reporters in Lahore he was visiting India with a message of peace, as dialogue is the only solution to all problems. He added he was looking forward to a new beginning for the people on both sides. He released 151 fishermen jailed in the country, as a goodwill gesture, on Sunday .

The officials who accompanied the prime minister included Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi, Foreign Affairs Secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry and Political Secretary Asif Kirmani. Hussain Nawaz, the son of Nawaz Sharif, also joined him during the two-day visit.
