SC allows Mullaperiyar Dam height to be raised

Date:

Chennai: Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday gave the final verdict on Mullaperiyar Dam case. Former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, M Karunanidhi, expressed his satisfaction and happiness over the Supreme Court’s verdict to allow the raising of the water level in the Mullaperiyar Dam to 142 feet from the existing 136 feet

“I am happy with the Supreme Court’s verdict. It is in Tamil Nadu’s favour,” said Karunanidh

However, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said his government had fought the case well in the court, and added that now the state cabinet would review the apex court’s verdict and decide on the next steps.

Former Kerala chief minister and veteran CPI-M leader V S Achuthanandan reacted to the apex court’s verdict and warned that this verdict will have huge ramifications for both Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The Supreme Court also appointed a supervising committee to look into the dam’s workings and restoration.
