Tanaka strikes out 11 as Yankees beat Angels

Date:

Masahiro Tanaka struck out 11 batters but did not figure in the Major League Baseball decision as the New York Yankees edged the Los Angeles Angels 3-2.

The 25-year-old Japanese right-hander, signed by the Yankees to a seven-year deal worth $155 million in January, surrendered two runs, including a solo homer, and scattered five hits with four walks over 6 1/3 innings on the mound on Sunday.

But it was Adam Warren, who took over for Tanaka in the seventh inning, that collected the victory while David Robertson pitched the ninth to earn the save.

Tanaka remains 3-0 this season and after a 24-0 campaign in Japan last year with the Rakuten Eagles and wins in his last four games of 2012, he is on a 31-game win streak dating to August 19, 2012.

Tanaka now has 46 strikeouts for the season, the most by a Yankee pitcher in his first handful of major league starts.

The Yankees evened the score in the seventh innings and Jacoby Ellsbury scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Ellsbury walked to lead off the eighth, took second on a walk to Carlos Beltran and reached third base on a passed ball.
