Interpol notice to Ramchandra Rao

Date:

New Delhi: On the request of FBI, Interpol has issued a Red Corner notice against Congress MP, KVP Ramchandra Rao, on Wednesday. The Rajya Sabha member was issued the notice in connection with his role in an international corruption scheme.  It is alleged bribes worth $18.5 million were paid out to government officials to allow the mining of titanium minerals in Andhra Pradesh.

Rao is wanted in the US for his role in the illegal titanium contract case, leading the FBI to request this Red Corner Notice from Interpol. The CBI, which represents Interpol in India, has forwarded the RCN to Haryana police, asking them to take necessary action.

Rao is among six people suspected to have played a role and is charged with one count each of racketeering, conspiracy and money laundering, and two counts of interstate travel in aid of racketeering. The other five defendants were also charged with one count of conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

The indictment seeks forfeiture from all six defendants of$10.59 million. It alleges the individuals in question used US financial institutions to engage in the international transmission of millions of dollars for the purpose of bribing Indian public officials to obtain approval of the necessary licenses for the project.
