Beijing: China has offered support to Sri Lanka over its human rights record. The backing comes with the U.S decision to table a U.N resolution against Colombo. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said his country opposes interference in the internal matters of Sri Lanka.
Minister Wang told his Sri Lankan counterpart G.L Peiris, in Beijing, that China would back the Sri Lankan government in safeguarding national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Sri Lanka this month rejected the U.S. criticism of its human rights record as “grossly disproportionate”, after a senior U.S. official Nisha Biswal’s comments. President Mahinda Rajapakse’s government denied allegations of atrocities in the civil war, which lasted nearly 30 years till 2009, rejecting calls for an international inquiry.
