An image of a man carrying a severed head of a buffalo on his head is being shared on social media with a claim that two people from the Muslim community threw the head inside the temple and the priest had to carry it out.
The post read, ” That chopped head of cow was thrown by 2 MusIim guys in a temple, Pujari ji had to do this to maintain the sanctity of temple and then see how this IsIamist is making fun of it…. Bloody secularism…. @amitshahofficial @narendramodi.”

A simple Reverse Image Search led us to the same picture on Getty Images. As per the image caption, it was taken in Assam in 2017 during the Durga Puja festival.
The caption read, “A buffalo sacrificed at Billeshwar Dewalaya Temple of Hindu goddess Durga on the occasion of Navami Durga Puja Festival. – stock photo…29th of September 2017, Belsor, Assam, India. A sacrificed buffalo head carried by a man on the head at Billeshwar Dewalaya Temple of Hindu goddess Durga on the occasion of Navami Durga Puja Festival at Belsor on the outskirts of Guwahati, in Assam, India.”
Based on this, we ran a keyword search and found a report by TOI dated September 2017 stating that buffalo sacrifice is an old ritual performed at Billeshwar Dewalaya Temple in Assam.
We also found a report by India Today from 2011, about the tradition of sacrificing Buffalo at Billeshwar Dewalaya Temple at Belsor, Assam, on the occasion of Navami Durga Puja.
Thus, from the above fact check, it is clear that the image in circulation is old and is being shared with a misleading claim.
