Joe Biden Criticises US Supreme Court Presidential Immunity Ruling, Calls It “A Terrible Disservice”

Date:

Washington, DC: In response to the US Supreme Court’s recent decision granting former President Donald Trump a degree of immunity from prosecution for actions taken while in office, President Joe Biden has expressed strong criticism. Biden warned that the ruling sets a “dangerous precedent” by providing former and future presidents with immunity for official acts.

Biden sharply criticised the Court’s decision, asserting that it had done “a terrible disservice” to the nation. Biden emphasised that the ruling effectively blocks any opportunity for Trump to face trial in connection with the January 6 Capitol riot.

The US President reiterated his belief that Trump should be held accountable for the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, arguing that the American people deserve judicial clarity on the incident before casting their votes in the upcoming November election.

President Biden expressed deep concerns, stating, “With today’s Supreme Court decision and presidential immunity that fundamentally changed for all practical purposes, today’s decision almost certainly means that there are virtually no limits on what the president can do.”

Criticising the apex court’s decision, Biden said that the decision undermines the rule of law in this country. “This decision today, has continued the court’s attack in recent years on a wide range of long-established legal principles in our nation. From gutting voting rights and civil rights to taking away a woman’s right to choose, to today’s decision that undermines the rule of law of this nation,” he said.

Earlier on Monday, the US Supreme Court ruled that former President Donald Trump is entitled to a degree of immunity from prosecution related to actions taken while in office. The 6-3 decision is expected to delay the upcoming trial for Trump’s alleged conspiracy to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

The case, widely anticipated as one of the most significant this year, overturned a federal appeals court’s February ruling that denied Trump immunity for alleged crimes aimed at overturning the 2020 election results.

On May 30, a New York court convicted Trump on 34 felony charges of falsifying business records to cover up a sex scandal during the closing stages of the 2016 presidential campaign. His sentencing is scheduled for July 11. This historic conviction marks Trump as the first former US president to be found guilty of a crime.
