New Delhi: Gory details are tumbling out from Birbhum violent incident where eight victims were first brutally thrashed before burnt alive, according to the autopsy report.
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee met the families of those killed and announced compensation. The opposition BJP has not only demanded her resignation but has called for President’s Rule to be imposed in the state.
Eight people including three women and two children were charred to death in Bogtui village in Birbhum district of West Bengal.
The violence erupted over the killing of local Trinamool panchayat member Bagdu Sheikh and has led to a political showdown between the ruling TMC and the opposition led by BJP.
A total of 23 people have been arrested in connection with the violence.
Though the CM has assured strict action against the police officials, there is a need for a swift impartial probe and bringing guilty to face the punishment.
The Union Home Ministry has sought a report from the Bengal government on Birbhum violence and the NHRC has taken suo moto notice of the incident.
Such violent incidents have no place in a democratic nation and must be dealt with a heavy hand of the law. It is a blot on the country and political slugfest over the killings should be avoided to bring law and order and peace prevail in the area.
