A political row between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress has erupted over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security breach in Punjab as his cavalcade was stranded for 20 minutes on road due to the blockade caused by protesting farmers.

Since then the Union Home Ministry as well as Punjab state government have set up separate probes to look into the serious lapse in PM’s security. The Supreme Court has asked for travel records to be preserved and paused the probes of the Centre and the State into the matter till Monday.

Security to the Prime Minister is provided by the elite Special Protection Group (SPG) personnel which is counted among the best in the world. The security on the ground and the PM’s visit to the States involve detailed and careful planning in a multi-layered manner involving the Intelligence Bureau, local police and the SPG.

The security lapse in Punjab on Wednesday which forced the Prime Minister to call off his visit and return to the Capital has to be viewed with utmost serious concern. Prime Minister’s security is above party affiliations and politics. There is no room for political slugfest in the matter.

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s explanations and utterances portray him in rather poor light. The CM must expedite the probe and fix the accountability on the state police officials for the PM’s security breach.

India has lost a Prime Minister and a former Prime Minister as their security was penetrated. The security lapse needs to be probed swiftly and thoroughly to fix the accountability.
