The 36 per cent spike in number of COVID-19 cases in Mumbai and worrying reports of fresh surge in five states – Maharashtra, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh – has come as yet another wake up call for millions across the country who have been behaving as if the pandemic is over.
Civic officials say careless attitude of citizens, allowing the general public to travel in local trains and opening of various other commercial activities have led to the surge in the number of cases in Mumbai. The reluctance to adhere to COVID-19 protocols and move around freely without masks is being cited as the primary reason for the surge.
Centre has warned all 5 states and reiterated that continued “adherence to Covid-appropriate behavior” is critical to break the chain of transmission of the virus and contain its spread.
Its time we stop playing with our lives and maintain COVID-19 appropriate behaviour to ensure that we collectively break the chain in national interest. Let us understand that the pandemic isn’t over yet.
