Is social media responsible for the shocking rise in lynching cases

In the last 2 months, 16 cases of lynching have been reported. 22 people have died as a result of these.

Alarming numbers! A thorough study of these cases shows that most of the killings were based on rumours and were forward messages circulated on What’s app.

Social media has taken over our lives like a menace. People start believing without validating the truth behind the news. Is the news correct? What is the source of the information? Background of the person who has written it? Is the same news available on other sources? Has the internet been used to check authentication? These are questions that need answers before we believe the information.

Lynching is serious. Taking someone’s life based on rumours is inhumane. No one has the right to assume, without giving the person a chance to prove his or her innocence. It is ruthless! As intelligent citizens in the 21st century, we cannot let speculative evidence take over our thinking.

If technology was invented to make life easier, then the correct and mindful usage of technology, is our judgement.
