History is turning a bloody page yet again in that graveyard of empires, Afghanistan. India, with its large investments in both infrastructure and, till lately, stance against the Taliban is one of the countries left in the lurch by the Saigon-like US withdrawal from this landlocked nation after 20 years of war.
More importantly, terrorism is a major worry, with the Taliban running riot across Afghanistan even as their leadership is safely ensconced in Pakistan. India cannot forget the IC-814 experience.
We have our task cut out. Deft diplomacy is needed to stay relevant in Afghanistan and keep India secure from the virus of fundamentalism.
