A minister prepares to read out a statement in the Rajya Sabha, but an Opposition member snatches the paper and tears it to pieces. Thursday’s scenes in Parliament — the Lok Sabha lurched from one adjournment to another — are dismaying.
For India and its Parliament, struck hard by the Covid pandemic, this legislative limbo is simply unaffordable. Again, it’s not the kind of live coverage the nation needs to see.
No party can claim any higher ground here; the 15th Lok Sabha suffered similarly when the BJP was the principal Opposition.
An all-party meeting of minds is needed. There’s work to be done by our elected representatives.
