Sarajevo: In a resolute stand for freedom of expression and access to accurate information, fact-checkers from around the globe convened for the 11th annual GlobalFact meeting in Sarajevo. Hosted against the backdrop of a historic city known for its resilience, the conference reaffirmed the crucial role of fact-checking in upholding journalistic integrity and enhancing public knowledge.
Organized by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), this year’s gathering underscored the fundamental right of all individuals to seek, receive, and impart information without constraint. “Fact-checking is not about silencing voices but amplifying truth,” emphasized one of the conference speakers, highlighting the essential mission of fact-checkers amidst mounting challenges.
Despite its pivotal role, fact-checking has increasingly come under fire, often unjustly labeled as censorship. Instances of online harassment, legal threats, and even physical attacks against fact-checkers have escalated in recent years, reflecting broader societal tensions over information control and dissemination.
NewsMobile, an IFCN signatory is actively participating in this year’s GlobalFact 11. The conference provides a platform to discuss the evolving landscape of media responsibility, tech platform moderation, and the ethical use of AI in combating misinformation.
At the opening of GlobalFact 11, 130 fact-checking organisations from 80 countries issued the ‘Sarajevo Statement,’ supporting fact-checking as free speech, not censorship
The statement addresses growing concerns over escalating attacks on fact-checkers and the fact-checking community globally.
