FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the claim, and found it to be misleading.

Conducting a Reverse Image Search on the video keyframes, the NM team found the full interview posted on the Prasar Bharati Archives YouTube channel. The video, posted on May 14, 2019, is Jawaharlal Nehru’s last significant interview with American TV host Arnold Michaelis. The video is titled: “Jawaharlal Nehru’s Last TV Interview, May 1964.”

Upon reviewing the entire video, we found that the clip circulating on social media was taken from the 14:50 mark of the full interview, where Nehru discusses the struggle for Independence.

In the full YouTube video, the interviewer asks, “You and Mr. Gandhi and Mr. Jinnah were all involved at that point of Independence and then partition… in the fight for India’s Independence from British domination.” Nehru, referring to Muhammad Ali Jinnah, a prominent leader of the Muslim League, responds, “Mr. Jinnah was not involved in the fight for Independence at all. In fact, he opposed it. The Muslim League was started in about 1911, I think. It was really initiated by the British and encouraged by them to create factions, which they did succeed to some extent. And ultimately, this led to the partition.”

It should be noted that in the full interview, Nehru never claims that he was not part of the Independence fight.

Thus, it is evident that Jawaharlal Nehru did not say that he was not part of the Independence fight. The video has been digitally manipulated.
