Fact Check: Viral Post Claiming BJP Leader Madhavi Latha Praises Muslim Community After Her Defeat In 2024 Polls Is Misleading

Date:

A video of BJP leader Madhavi Latha saying that Muslims can never be terrorists is doing the rounds on social media. Many users claim that she has learned a lesson after her defeat in the elections. It is worth noting that Madhavi contested the Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket from the Hyderabad seat, but AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi defeated her by about three lakh votes.

A Facebook user posted the viral post (archive link) with the following caption:  चुनाव हारते ही जिज्जी को अकल आ गई

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, the NM team identified a YouTube video on a verified channel — Hyderabad Festivals, dated April 22, 2024. The video starting at 1:20 matches with the viral clip, and given that the video was published in April, it predates the election results of the Lok Sabha elections, which came out on June 4, 2024.

According to a news article in The Print, dated April 20, 2024, the clip is from April 19, 2024, when Madhavi was walking in different areas of Hyderabad for the election campaign. During this time, a Muslim law student, Mir Mukaram Sultan, who was passing by, stopped Madhavi and started questioning her.

Given that the video was shot in April 2024, it is confirmed that it is not related to the election results. Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming BJP leader Madhavi Latha started praising Muslims after her defeat in the elections, is misleading.
