FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the claim, and found it to be False.
Running the viral video keyframes through Reverse Image Search, the NM team traced a media report in Gulf News, dated July 12, 2013, with a title: “Freed after 20 years by son I had in prison.”
Similar reports can be found in the Human Rights Initiative and The Times of India, dated May 5, 2013.
According to a report in The Phuket News, Vijay Kumari was arrested in 1993, accused of murdering a neighbour in her village in Uttar Pradesh. Pregnant at the time of her arrest, she gave birth to her son, Kanhaiya, while imprisoned in Lucknow jail. The son, featured in the viral image, stayed with her in prison until he was six years old before being sent to a government-run home. Upon turning 18, Kanhaiya began working in a government factory, diligently saving his earnings. After 19 years, he was finally able to secure his mother’s release.
The same report was also detailed in a BBC video report, where both Vijay Kumari and her son can be seen narrating their story.
Additionally, we found reports on this story on the YouTube channels of India TV, NDTV, and News 18 India.
Therefore, it is clear that the viral claim of a son marrying his mother is baseless.
