Fact Check: 2022 Clip Of Speaker Om Birla Reprimanding An MP In House Fictitiously Shared As Recent

Date:

Om Birla was re-elected as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha through a voice vote on June 26, 2024. He contested as the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) candidate against Congress candidate Kodikunnil Suresh. This marks his second term as Speaker. A video of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla reprimanding a Member of Parliament (MP) with the words, “Respected member, do you have a problem? If you keep standing again and again, I will send you outside,” is extensively circulated on social media, claiming that he made these remarks after being re-elected as Speaker.

The Facebook post reads: यही तेवर और अंदाज़ के लिए ही दोबारा चुनें गए है ओम बिरला जी शुरुवात ही धाकड़ और विस्फोटक तरीके से. (English translation: This style and attitude is exactly why Om Birla Ji has been re-elected. He’s off to a bold and explosive start.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the claim, and found it to be misleading.

The NM team observed a date stamp “12.12.22” in the bottom right corner of the video, indicating that the footage is from 2022, not 2024.

Running a Reverse Image Search, we found the live broadcast of Lok Sabha session held on December 12, 2022, available on Sansad TV, with a title: “Lok Sabha Question Hour | 11.00 AM – 12.02 PM | 12 December 2022.” And, at the 52:06 timestamp, the viral clip can be seen.

During the session, Birla was addressing a question regarding currency devaluation and foreign exchange reserves in the Lok Sabha. The original video depicts him cautioning members against mentioning caste or religion in the House, following allegations by Congress MP Revanth Reddy regarding Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s remarks about his community and Hindi proficiency.

We also came across a report by The Times of India, dated December 12, 2022. It stated that following Reddy’s comments during the Lok Sabha’s Question Hour, Speaker Birla emphasised that caste and religion do not influence the election of members. He warned, “No one here should ever use such words in the House. Otherwise, I will have to take action against the member.”

Therefore, a video showing Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla reprimanding a member during the Question Hour in the Lower House of Parliament in 2022 is being falsely presented as recent.
