Fact Check: Viral Image Showing Man Accompanying Sonia Gandhi Is NOT Justice S. Muralidhar, BUT Lawyer K.C. Kaushik

Date:

A photo is being circulated on social media, alleging that former Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court, Justice S. Muralidhar, acted as an advocate for Congress leader Sonia Gandhi during her nomination filing for the 2004 General elections.

The Facebook post reads:

(English Translation: The man in the black coat accompanying Sonia Gandhi during her nomination process in 2004 is Muralidhar. He was associated with the National Human Rights Commission and also worked with the Law Commission as a part-time job. In 2006, he was appointed as a judge of Delhi High Court, where he remained for 14 consecutive years without being transferred. Muralidhar’s wife, Usha, is associated with an international organisation and has worked in India for the interests of Naxalites and terrorists, alongside Naxalite supporter Gautam Navlakha. When security agencies sent Gautam Navlakha to jail in a case, he was granted bail in 2018, by none other than Judge Muralidhar. This is how the Congress system works. This is why no one has been able to defeat the Congress since 1947. Surprisingly, Naxalite cases always end up being listed before Muralidhar in Delhi court. How does this happen?)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the claim, and found it to be false.

Performing a Reverse Image Search of the viral photo, the NM team detected the same image on the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the Congress Party, dated April 11, 2019. The tweet indicates that the picture was taken when Sonia Gandhi filed her nomination from Rae Bareli for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Media reports covering Sonia Gandhi’s nomination can be found here and here. At that time, Justice Muralidhar was serving as a Delhi High Court Judge.

Using this information, we identified the lawyer in the viral photo as K.C. Kaushik, not Justice S. Muralidhar. A video by the news agency ANI also identified K.C. Kaushik as Rahul Gandhi’s lawyer when he filed his nomination from Wayanad. Given below is the comparison of photos of K.C. Kaushik and Justice S. Muralidhar.

Additionally, when this post went viral, K.C. Kaushik clarified that he was the one present during Sonia Gandhi’s nomination filing on 11 April 2019, to assist her. He condemned the fake news that misrepresented the identity of Justice S. Muralidhar.

In conclusion, we can say that the individual accompanying Sonia Gandhi during her nomination filing is K.C. Kaushik, NOT Justice S. Muralidhar.
