FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the claim, and found it to be Misleading.
Closely examining the viral video, the NM team identified the TV9 Kannada logo. Upon Running the video keyframes through the Reverse Image Search using the keyframes from the viral video, it was found that the video report had been uploaded on the YouTube channel of TV9 Kannada on June 11, 2022. As per the report, the police arrested a popcorn vendor in Bengaluru for allegedly spitting into the oil used for making popcorn.
The same Bengaluru incident had been covered by other media outlets like The Times of India, The New Indian Express, The News Minute, Deccan Herald, and The Hindu.
According to The News Minute report, the Muslim popcorn seller has been identified as Nawaz Pasha (21). He is out on bail. The incident occurred in the early hours of June 11, when Nawaz Pasha was preparing to make popcorn at Lalbagh Botanical Garden. Pasha tore open an oil packet with his hands and kept a torn fragment of the packaging in his mouth while filling the empty oil bottle and spat it. Meanwhile, a middle-aged jogger observed him spitting. Soon, a mob gathered around him, accusing him of spitting in the oil thrice.
Later, an on-duty Siddapura constable assessed the situation’s severity and alerted other senior officers, who arrived at the spot and detained Pasha. The accuser refused to come to the police station to file an FIR against Nawaz, prompting the police to register a case suo motu. They have charged him under Sections 269, 270, 272, and 273. Sections 269 and 270 deal with offenses affecting public health and safety, penalising negligent acts that could potentially spread infections dangerous to life. Sections 272 and 273 prescribe punishment for adulteration of food or drink intended for sale.
Hence, it is evident that the man was caught spitting in the oil used to make popcorn, but NOT for using urine instead of salt.
