Fact Check: 2020 Clip Of Burqa-clad Women Sitting In Front Of A Bank Falsley Linked To Cong’s Mahalakshmi Scheme

Date:

A video showing burqa-clad women sitting in a queue is being widely circulated on social media, claiming that they have lined up to collect ₹8,500/month that Congress promised under the Mahalakshmi scheme.

The Congress’ Mahalakshmi scheme aims to “provide ₹1 lakh per year to every poor Indian family as an unconditional cash transfer”. Under this scheme, they would provide ₹8,500 per month directly to the account of female heads of the BPL (below poverty line) families.

The video is being shared on Facebook with a caption: Family members of Akbar, Babar and Aurangzeb in queue for getting ₹8,500/month under Rahul Gandhi’s “Khata khat scheme”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be false.

A close look at the video makes it clear that it was shot in front of a Bank of Baroda branch. At one point in the video, the branding of ‘Guru Gobind Singh Public School, Gandhi Colony, Muzzafarnagar, appears, confirming that the video has been recorded in Muzzafarnagar, Uttar Pradesh.

We did a keyword search and found that the same video had been uploaded on YouTube on April 17, 2020, with a Hindi headline (English translation): “In Muzzafarnagar’s Gandhi Colony, there’s a crowd of Muslim women… know what is the reason.

The description of the video stated that the women had gathered in front of a branch of the Bank of Baroda to withdraw ₹500 credited to their Jan Dhan accounts by the government. There were rumours that if the money was not withdrawn, the amount would not be credited any longer.

We also found another video uploaded on the YouTube channel of News 18 India on April 20, 2020.

According to this report, women had come to the bank to withdraw the money from their Jan Dhan accounts because of rumours that the amount would not be available if it was not withdrawn immediately. However, bank officials made the beneficiaries follow social distancing norms and reassured them that the relief money would not be taken back.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old video showing burqa-clad women sitting in a queue is viral with fictitious claims.
