Fact Check: 2018 Report About India Delivering 22 Metro Trains To Sydney Viral With False Claims

A social media post, commending Modi government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, is being widely shared, stating that 22 metro trains running in Sydney were produced in India.

The image has been shared with a caption: “22 metro trains were Made operational in Sydney yesterday! And as a Matter of pride, all these trains were MADE IN INDIA!
First time in History, Coaches Made in India being run in a foreign land!
When PM Modi said New India, this is what he meant! We guess, feel proud that instead of Made in USA & CHINA Made in INDIA Is the new buzz around the globe.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fack-checked, and found it to be Misleading.

Searching with relevant keywords, the NM team traced a media report in Business Today with a title: “Sydney’s Fully-Automated, Driverless Metro Trains Were Powered by Make in India”, dated May 29, 2019. This report highlights a milestone for the ‘Make in India’ initiative in assembling all the coaches in India. In 2019, Sydney inaugurated its first driverless metro line, serviced by a French company Alstom, which delivered 22 six-coach trains. The trains were assembled in Andhra Pradesh as part of the Make in India initiative and not manufactured in India. In December 2018, Alstom completed the delivery of the last of these 22 Metropolis trains for the Sydney Metro from its Sri City facility in Andhra Pradesh.

A subsequent report on Zee News, dated May 29, 2019, stated that the Metropolis trains were designed for Sydney in France and assembled at the Centre of Excellence in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, India.
