Rahul Gandhi’s Remarks On Hinduism Sparks Uproar In Lok Sabha; Amit Shah Demands Apology

New Delhi: Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s response to the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address created significant uproar in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

  • During the debate on the motion of thanks on the President’s Address, Gandhi targeted the BJP-led NDA government and alleged there has been a attack on the idea of India.
  • Gandhi said, “There has been a systematic and a full-scale assault on the idea of India, the Constitution and on the people who resisted the attack on the Constitution. Many of us were personally attacked. Some of the leaders are still in jail. Anyone who resisted the idea of concentration of power and wealth, aggression on poor and Dalits and minorities was crushed.”

  • Gandhi in his remark further added saying, “All our great men have spoken about non-violence and finishing fear…But, those who call themselves Hindu only talk about violence, hatred, untruth…Aap Hindu ho hi nahi. (you are not Hindu)”

  • The remark triggered a significant uproar in the House, prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene, stating, “Calling the entire Hindu community violent is a very serious charge.” In response, Gandhi replied saying, ” Modi, BJP, RSS not the entire Hindu community.”

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah responding to Gandhi’s remark in Lok Sabha said, “The Leader of Opposition has categorically said that those who call themselves Hindu talk of violence and do violence. He doesn’t know that crores of people proudly call themselves Hindu. Connecting violence with any religion is wrong. He should apologise.”

  • Speaking on the Agniveer scheme for entry into Armed Forces, the Congress MP said, “One Agniveer lost his life in a landmine blast but he is not called a ‘martyr’… ‘Agniveer’ is a use & throw labourer…”
  • Objecting to Gandhi’s statement, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, “He Rahul Gandhi) should not try to mislead the House by making wrong statements. Financial assistance of Rs one crore is given to the family of the Agniveer who sacrifices his life while protecting our borders or during war.”
  • During his address Gandhi also raised the issue of alleged irregularities in the NEET examination in the Lok Sabha and demanded a separate one-day discussion on the issue in the Parliament.
  • The Congress leader said, “A message is disseminated to the country, from Parliament. We want to send a message to students that NEET issue is important for the Parliament. So, to send this message, we want the Parliament to discuss this.”
  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh responded to Rahul Gandhi’s demand and said that any discussion should be done only after the Motion of thanks on the President’s address.
