MEA Cautions Indians Going To Cambodia For Jobs

Date:

New Delhi: The Center has cautioned Indian job seekers in Cambodia from falling for fraudulent job postings and human trafficking schemes, and has advised them to proceed with caution before accepting any job offer.

The Center stated in its recommendation that Indians are “falling into the trap of human traffickers” and are “lured by fake promises of lucrative job opportunities in Cambodia.” The Ministry of External Affairs, or MEA, advised Indians wishing to work in Cambodia on Thursday to go through only authorized agencies and to properly investigate the histories of their employers before moving there.

The MEA further stated that it has been seen that Indian citizens are becoming victims of human traffickers after being seduced by false claims of profitable employment prospects in Cambodia. These Indian people are forced to engage in illicit activities, such as internet financial fraud. To help impacted Indians, the MEA is collaborating with Cambodian authorities through its embassy in Phnom Penh.

This occurred days after it was reported that at least 5,000 Indians were being compelled to pose as law enforcement officers and create fake profiles on dating apps to detain them against their will in Cambodia after being offered jobs. The magnitude of the deception—the Center values the proceeds of criminal activity during the previous six months at an astounding ₹ 500 crore—led the two nations to collaborate to expose it all.

The MEA and Cambodian authorities have worked together to rescue and return 250 Indians to their homeland, including 75 in the past three months. According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the Indian Embassy is “promptly responding to complaints from Indian nationals who were lured with employment opportunities to that country but were forced to undertake illegal cyber work.”
