Assam Floods Claim 8 More Lives, Kaziranga Submerged

Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam has worsened even further claiming 8 more lives taking the death toll to 46 since May. More than 16.25 lakh people have been affected by the deluge spread across 27 districts.

Officials of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said in a statement that eight people, including a woman in Sonitpur district and a child in Darrang district have drowned during the past 24 hours while three others have been missing.

The incessant heavy rainfall in the past few days has led to flooding in most parts of Kaziranga National Park (KNP) and Tiger Reserve in Assam. According to the officials, 178 of the 233 forest camps inside the park, are under at least five feet of water. Due to rising water, forest guards have abandoned the camps inside the park.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the recent casualties include two in Sonitpur district, and one each in Morigaon, Dibrugarh, Darrang, Golaghat, Biswanath, and Tinsukia districts.
  • Three others are reported missing amidst ongoing rescue and relief operations in the affected regions.
  • The flood situation in Assam has severely impacted numerous districts, with Dhubri emerging as the worst-hit district affecting 223,210 people. Darrang follows with 183,738 affected individuals, while Lakhimpur reports 166,063 affected people. Golaghat, Nalbari, Cachar, Barpeta, Dhemaji, Sonitpur, Morigaon, Majuli, Sivasagar, and Biswanath districts also face significant impacts, with tens of thousands affected in each area.
  • The ASDMA continues to coordinate relief efforts to aid those affected and manage the widespread disruption caused by the floods. The ASDMA said that 1120165 animals are also affected in the deluge.
  • Rescue teams of NDRF, SDRF, Fire & Emergency Services, administration, Indian army, and paramilitary forces are engaged in rescue operations in different areas and on Wednesday rescued 8377 people.
  • Over 3.86 lakh people are taking shelter in 515 relief camps and distribution centres set up by administration in 24 flood hit districts. 2800 villages under 105 revenue circles are still under water and the flood waters inundated 39451.51 hectares of crop area.
