US Presidential Elections: Process And How Candidates Are Elected

Date:

Washington DC: The US will go to polls this year to elect its 47th President. It will be a rematch between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Both candidates faced each other in the 2020 elections and Biden got the better of Trump and won the Presidency.

So this year the country will go to polls again and the fate of the two candidates is at stake. Former President Donald Trump will face his Democratic Rival and current President Joe Biden in the elections again.

How The US President Is Elected

So the first step of the US elections is the Primaries and Caucuses. Many people want to be President, each with their ideas about how a government should function. People with similar ideas belong to the same political party. This is where the primary and Caucuses come in. Candidates from each political party campaign throughout the country to win the favour of their party members.

STEP 1

In February of this year, the candidates were selected who would represent people at the conventions. The main focus of the results was on the results from Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina which determined the final presidential nominee for both the parties. Donald Trump convincingly won the Republican Party’s nomination as the other candidates backed out of the race. So this resulted in a rematch of the 2020 election between Former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden.

STEP 2: National Convention

To choose a final candidate for president, each party has a national convention. After being chosen to represent the people in the primaries and caucuses, state delegates will now officially reveal the party’s ultimate presidential nominee after the conventions.

The vice presidential candidate, or running mate, is also selected by the presidential candidate. The presidential candidate and his or her staff travel the nation campaigning to gain the confidence of the American people.

STEP 3: General Election

Voting for one president and one vice president is conducted in each state in the union. In November, American voters will select their preferred presidential candidate and their running partner.
Voters support the electors, a group of individuals when they cast their ballots.

Candidates will win all of the state’s electoral votes if they receive the majority of the vote cast in their state, except Maine and Nebraska. The candidate who receives the greatest number of electoral votes wins the presidency of the United States.

STEP 4: The Electoral College

The next step in the process is the Electoral College. It is a process in which electors or representatives from each state in numbers proportional to the state’s population cast their vote and determine who will be president.

Each state gets a certain number of electors based on its representation in Congress. A total of 538 electors are selected according to each state’s policy. Each elector casts one vote following the general election, and the candidate who gets more than 270 votes wins the election and becomes the president. The newly elected president and the vice president are inaugurated in January.
