UK Home Secretary Clears Sanjay Bhandari’s Extradition

Date:

London: British Home Secretary Suella Braverman has approved the reference note in connection with Sanjay Bhandari’s extradition to India.

According to reports, the Home Secretary approved the extradition orders on January 12. Sanjay Bhandari has 14 days to appeal against the order in the high court.

Sanjay Bhandari, who is wanted in India for violating the Official Secrets Act, is currently seeking asylum in the UK. He is facing charges of money laundering and tax evasion.

“Bhandari’s extradition has been cleared by the UK Home Secretary last week. This brings us one step closer to bringing him here but he still can go to the high court,” an official said as quoted in a report.

Earlier on November 7, District Judge Michael Snow, who heard the case at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London, reportedly concluded that there are no bars to him being extradited.

His order added that “ I am satisfied that extradition is compatible with the defendant’s Convention rights, I must send this case to the Secretary of State for a decision as to whether the defendant is to be extradited.”

During the hearing, Indian authorities said that Bhandari will be kept in a separate cell in Tihar Jail with healthcare supervision while he faces trial in court for the cases against him.
