Top 8 Unconventional Romantic Films To Watch This Valentine’s Day

Date:

The town has been painted red and white with couples and singles taking to the streets to celebrate the ‘Day of Love.’ Some go all out with huge plans to celebrate it with their soulmate over a candle lit dinner and romantic music, some prefer to go out and party with their singles gang and the ones who can take some time off plan a short trip or a vacation. But in case all of these scenarios don’t work out and you want to sit at home and chill with or without your partner, then there is a list of unconventional romantic films to keep you company.

While  movies have explored the romance genre quite a bit with every other film being based on love, here is a list of Top 10 mushy movies with a twist.

  1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) – Director Michel Gondry

Real love is when the protagonist has found out that his quirky girlfriend has erased the part of her memory where he exists right before Valentine’s and he struggles to understand why. Jim Carrey’s character decides to take on the experiment and the audiences go through his memories, the story playing in backwards for us making it heart wrenching. Keep a box of tissues next to you because you will legit break down during the film.

2. Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010) – Dir Edgar Wright

The insane film executed in a comic book fashion has a quirky plot. Scott Pilgrim, a young guy is trying to win the heart of a girl who he fell in love with, and yes it was love at first sight. But there is a battle that he needs to prepare for, actually 7, because Ramona has 7 hyper possessive ex-partners that Scott needs to defeat in order to win her love.

3. Her (2013) – Dir Spike Jonze

This emotional drama is about sometime in the future where people are more isolated and technology is helping them fill a vacuum in their lives. The plot revolves around a man who falls in love with an incredibly advanced software with a female voice called, Samantha. He ends up finding a great connect and bond with the software and her voice. Watch it for the stellar performance of Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson who shines as the voice of the OS.

4. Chunking Express (1994) – Dir Wong Kar Wai

Not including a Wong Kar Wai film in this category would be a cardinal sin. The director has made some classic cult films like ‘Days of Being Wild’ and the classic ‘In the Mood for Love’ but our pick today is the technically spectacular ‘Chunking Express.’ The film has two very different kinds of love stories – the central characters of both being cops. Both stories show the aftermath of break ups and how the two cops deal with their losses. Watch out for the off beat story line, the cinematography and the performances by Takeshi Kaneshiro, Faye Wong, Tony Leung Chi-Wai and Brigitte Lin.

5. Kaagaz ke Phool (1959) – Dir Gurudutt

‘Waqt ne kiya, kya haseen sitam’, the lines of the famous song from ‘Kaagaz ke Phool’ still resonates amid lovers of music. When the film released, it bombed at the box office but later was acclaimed as a cult classic which was said to be ahead of its time. Gurudutt plays the role of a film director who discovers a potential new star in a woman named Shanti. While Shanti becomes a superstar with time, the famous film director is left forgotten as his career declines. The irony of the situation with tones of love was depicted beautifully by Gurudutt, also foreshadowing his real life.

6. Lars and the Real Girl (2007) – Dir Craig Gillespie

This film talks about social awkwardness and people who have issues about opening up to others as well as intimacy. Lars is a super shy, awkward guy who doesn’t like spending time with anyone and not even his own family. When he finally falls in love and introduces the new woman to his family, it turns out to be a life-size doll.

7. Call Me by your Name (2017) – Dir Luca Guadagnino

This recent ‘Coming of age’ romance drama film garnered a lot of audience praises and critical acclaim. Set in 1980’s Italy, the plot is about a young 17 year old boy, Elio who finds love with an older man, a research assistant hired by his father. The candor and gentle development of the characters and the story makes your heart warm with love and acceptance.
