SP leader asks Rajya Sabha ticket for Memon’s wife axed

Date:

Mumbai: A couple of days after Yakub Memon was hanged, the controversies still refuse to die down. While there’s one section that all in favour of the verdict, there’s one that calls it a breach of justice.

And then there’s another faction which demands ‘justice’ for his family.

One such politician, Maharashtra SP vice-president Mohammed Farooq Ghosi had a typically embarrassing moment when he was booted out for showing ‘tremendous’ support to Memon’s family.

The Samajwadi Party on Saturday suspended Ghosi after he requested Mulayam Singh Yadav to nominate 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub Memon’s wife as a Rajya Sabha MP.

Even though he tried to take a u-turn by saying that what he wrote in the letter was his personal opinion, yet, the damage was done. He had also said that he did not consult any party leader before sending the letter to Mulayam Singh Yadav.

In a letter to Yadav, he had described Memon’s wife Raheen as “helpless”.

“Raheen was in jail for many years. How much she would have suffered.. Today I find Raheen helpless and there are many such Muslims in the country who find themselves helpless and for whom we have to fight for. We should make Raheen a Rajya Sabha MP and make her the voice of weak and helpless people,” Ghosi wrote.
