Simone Biles wins beam for third world gold in Glasgow

Date:

American Simone Biles defended her balance beam title at the world gymnastics championships on Sunday to claim a ninth world gold and third of the competition.

The 18-year-old scored 15.358 to take the title by a 1.025 margin on Sanne Wevers of the Netherlands (14.33) with Germany’s Pauline Schaefer winning bronze (14.133) on the final day at Glasgow’s Hydro Arena.

Biles was adding this to team and all-round gold in Glasgow this week.

She delivered an acrobatic performance on the apparatus on which she nearly fell on her way to a record third all-around final on Thursday, but made no mistake this time landing solidly with a double somersault.

She now has 13 world medals — nine in gold — and has a chance for a tenth as she bids to defend her floor title later on Sunday.
