Shastri backs ‘all-time great’ Dhoni to succeed during Proteas series

Date:

Bengaluru: Team India director Ravi Shastri has described Mahendra Singh Dhoni as ‘all-time great’ and backed the limited overs skipper to succeed during the home series South Africa.

Dhoni, who led India to glory in the 2007 World T20 and 2011 World Cup (ODI), returned to take charge of his side after a three-month break.

Maintaining that India’s performance is not being affected by two-captain theory, Shastri said “Dhoni is a seasoned campaigner, one of the all-time greats of world cricket. So he takes over a job he has been doing all this while, so things fall into place. The team has played under him, they played the World Cup under him. It makes no difference to the team. They are playing under a champion”.

Earlier this month, India ended a 22-year series drought in Sri Lanka when the Virat Kohli-led side clinched the three-match Test series 2-1.

India will play three-match T20 International series against South Africa starting on October 2 at Dharamsala, before locking horns in the five-match ODI and four-Test series.
