Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set for a two-day visit to Japan to take part in the second in-person Quad leaders’ summit.

As leaders from the 4 corners of the world gear up to meet for the Quad summit, here is what you need to know.

What is the Quad?

‘Quadrilateral Security Dialogue’ or QUAD is a strategic forum comprising four countries: the United States of America (USA), India, Australia, and Japan, with the primary objective of working “free, open, and prosperous” Indo-Pacific region.

Quad was first mooted by then Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2007 and in the same year, on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), this group interacted for the first time.

The forum plays a significant role for India as well as for other member nations in countering Chinese influence, combating post covid diplomacy, providing security in the Indian ocean, and achieving a rule-based multipolar world.

The objective behind the QUAD group is the initiative to develop a new strategy to keep critical sea routes in the Indo-Pacific free of any influences.
