Chennai: Malayalam filmmaker Priyadarshan, known for his Bollywood films like Malamaal Weekly and Bhool Bhulaiya, and his wife Lissy have decided to end their marriage.
Lissy, a former actress, filed for divorce on Monday.
After initial rebuttals, the celebrity couple admitted that they were on the brink of separation. However, common friends of the couple, including Mohanlal and Kamal Haasan, played peacemakers and the marriage was saved. Things reportedly turned bitter between the couple in January this year.
“It is with profound sadness that I am announcing that I and Priyadarshan have decided to get separated after 24 years of marriage. I have filed for divorce today (Monday) in Chennai family court. Both our children and close friends are aware of this decision,” Lissy said in a statement
Lissy was 16 when she first met Priyadarshan on the sets of his 1984 film Odaruthammava Alariyam, and fell in love during the course of the shoot. She gave up her career to settle down with Priyadarshan after they got married in 1990.Â
This is the second high-profile divorce in Malayalam cinema this year after actor Dileep and his actress wife Manju Warrier announced their separation in June. Â Â
