Not enough cyber crime specialists, Mumbai top cop admits

Mumbai, Aug 29 (PTI) Mumbai police commissioner DattaPadsalgikar today admitted that the city police lacks enoughtrained personnel for dealing with the rising cyber crime. He also mentioned that conviction rate in Mumbai hadimproved drastically, from 19 per cent five years ago to 60per cent now. During a question-answer session at the IndianMerchants Chamber, he said that cyber crime was a major issue. "It’s a major issue, we do need people especially tobe trained for this. I do admit there aren’t too many trainedpeople in cyber crime," he said. "We take help from other agencies, both government andprivate, to help us train our people and also help us incertain important cases," he said. Rising cyber crime was a challenge, he stated. "IT Actsays investigating officer cannot be below the rank ofinspector. But we don’t have so many trained inspectors." "The conviction rate of Mumbai city has definitelyimproved. Five years back it was 19 per cent, today it isabout 60 per cent," he said. He also made a presentation on the traffic situationin the city. "Keeping Mumbai safe is the biggest challenge interms of traffic control," he said. Padsalgikar also mentioned, while describing how toughthis task is, the case of Vilas Shinde, a traffic cop who isbattling for his life in the hospital after being attackedwith a wooden plank by a juvenile when asked for vehicledocuments.
