New guidelines for adoption issued

Date:

Now adopting a child has become easier.  The new process has reduced red tape and now both non-resident Indians and Indian citizens will be treated equally. A time frame for adoption has been introduced along with monitoring of adoption agencies and pre-adoption foster care option for parents who are not mentally ready to adopt a child.

The new guidelines for a transparent adoption process have been listed by Ministry of Women and Child Development, under Maneka Gandhi. It will also include making the adoption process online.

A database of kids available for adoption has been compiled by The Central Adoption Resource Authority. The prospective parents can register on the site according to the age, language etc..

Now more NRI’s will get a chance to adopt a child.  At present, only 20% of children are allowed to be adopted by the NRI’s. There are an estimated 10,000 families who would like to adopt.

Rules to follow:

1.       The couple have to in a stable marital relationship.

2.       The age difference between the child and parents should be more than 25 years.

3.       Single men are not allowed to adopt a girl child but a single woman can adopt both the genders.

4.       A 45 year old couple cannot adopt a child of age up to 4 years and for the kids of age up to 8 the parent age is capped at 55.
