National Girl Child Day was started by the Government of India as a mission for the development of the girls of the nation. It is celebrated on January 24, every year, and this year’s theme is ‘Empowering girls for a brighter tomorrow’.

Today, many programmes are being organised to celebrate the day such as awareness campaigns on saving the girl child, child sex ratios, and how to create and healthy and safe environment for girls.
Haryana and Rajasthan will be awarded for their great efforts and performance for the initiative of ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ in an event hosted in Delhi today.
In Andhra Pradesh, a weeklong event has been organised to commemorate National Girl Child Day and the celebrations would include self-defence training, awareness programmes, competitions for children, and lot more.

The celebration of National Girl Child Day began with an aim to offer more support and fresh opportunities to girls all over India. Another purpose of celebrating the day was to highlight the inequalities faces by girls in our society in areas such as nutrition, education, medical care, protection, honour, legal rights, child marriage, and many more.
The day also acknowledges the meaningful contributions of females in the decision making processes and across various sectors of the society and in every walk of life.

- Increasing awareness among people and offering new opportunities to the girls.
- Ensuring enjoyment of all human rights to girls.
- Increasing awareness about gender inequality.
- Highlighting girl child issues.
- Getting rid of all inequalities faced by women of our society.

The Indian government has announced schemes and steps to ensure a better quality of life for every girl in India, and some of these rights are mentioned here.
- Sex determination before birth is illegal in India.
- Girl child marriages are being reduced and restricted.
- The government has introduced ‘Save The Girl Child’ scheme.
- An open learning system has been introduced for girls of the backwards classes.
- Self-help groups have also been established to provide a better livelihood for girls living in rural areas.
- Anti-natal care has been made mandatory for pregnant women to deal with illiteracy, malnutrition, infant mortality, and poverty.
- Primary school education has been made free and compulsory for both boys and girls till the age of 14.
