Manipur Violence: 23,000 Civilians Rescued, Curfew Partially Lifted In Churachandpur

Imphal: Assam Rifles and Indian Army rescued 23,000 civilians and moved them to the operating bases away from the conflict-hit region on Sunday.

  • People were seen getting out of their houses to buy essentials as curfew was lifted in the Churachandpur district, where violence was reported on May 3.
  • The curfew was lifted for a few hours for civilians to purchase essential commodities.
  • The rescued civilians were shifted to Churachandpur, Moreh, Kakching, and Kangpokpi districts which are under Army’s “firm control”.
  • The past 24 hours also witnessed the Army significantly enhancing surveillance efforts through aerial surveillance, movement of UAVs, and redeployment of Army Helicopters within Imphal Valley.
  • State governor Sushri Anusuiya Uikey appealed to the people in the state to maintain brotherhood and dispel the feeling of fear and insecurity, said an official release from the governor’s office.
  • Sharad Pawar said that he will talk with CM Eknath Shinde and demand the safe return of students stuck in conflict-hit regions.
  • Pawar said the parents of several of these stranded students met him at his residence in Baramati, requesting his intervention in ensuring their rescue.
