Let a non-Gandhi lead the party for 5 yrs: Modi’s challenge to Congress

Friday election rallies saw PM Modi, Rahul Gandhi taking potshots at each other. While Prime Minister Modi addressed several rallies in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi was seen campaigning in Madhya Pradesh.

Speaking at a rally in Chhattisgarh’s Ambikapur, PM Modi challenged Congress Patry to let somebody outside Nehru-Gandhi family lead the party for five years.

“I want to challenge them [Congress]; let some good leader of Congress outside of the [Gandhi] family become the party president for five years, then I will say that Nehru ji really created a truly democratic system there, ” he said.

“These people still have not come to terms that I am the PM, it has been nearly four and a half years. They are still crying, how can a ‘Chaiwala’ become PM?. Now they say a ‘Chaiwala’ became PM because of one great person,” Modi said responding to Shashi Tharoor’s comment that a Chaiwala can become a PM in this country because of the institutional structure that Nehru ji created.

Lauding the voters of the Prime Minister said, ” Despite the fear of violence, people in the first phase came out in big numbers. Even in Bastar, locals exercised their democratic right and it is here as well as across Chhattisgarh that the spirit of democracy truly thrives.”

The first phase elections in Chhattisgarh took place on November 12 for 18 seats. the state will go to polls again on November 20 for the remaining 72 seats.
