Jharkhand: Eight people sentenced to life imprisonment for lynching

Additional district and session judge of Latehar civil court, Jharkhand on Friday convicted eight people and awarded them life imprisonment for mob lynching.

Additional District Judge, Rishikesh Kumar, pronounced the sentence and each of the convicts were fined a sum of Rs 25,000. The convicts will have to spend one more year in the prison in case they fail to pay the fine.

In March 2016, Imtiyaz Khan(32), a cattle trader, and Imitiaz Khan (12) were hanged from a tree after being beaten up by a mob in Khaprelwar village of Latehar district. They were reportedly taking their cattle to a village fair for sale when they were attacked by the so-called Cow vigilantes.

“We seek death penalty for the killers and compensation for the family members to eke out a living,” the news agency, IANS quotes Sayra Bibi wife of Imtiyaz.

Five of the convicts were arrested shortly after the incident while the remaining three had surrendered before a local court.
