Festivals

The beautiful and vibrant India comes alive as the colourful festivals celebrated here. India is a land of cultures and people who come together for celebration. The celebration of colours with this intensity and depth is seen here.

“Chai-Sutta”

O

On many nukkads of India, one can see the cigarette puffs with the steaming teas. Be it the North Campus of DU, or the intellectuals of JNU, the nearest roadside tea stall will have Chai-Sutta for your daily needs.

Distance is in kilometers hours and minutes

We’re probably the only country in the world where the SI Unit for the measurement of distance is time and not metres. “How far you from here yaar”, is the question, and the response, almost always, is “Bas paanch (five) minutes

Babu English

DOYOUSPEAKENGLISH

Our colonial history makes it inevitable for us to not value the charm and prestige of an English speaking person. I remember as a young metro born girl, I was often asked to speak in English as it was fascinating to know a foreign language in my rural roots. But the fascination for foreign language is still there, we often forget that the mother tongue is different and angrezi is an acquired language. Majority of our country measures intellectual capacity not in terms of debates or discussions, but the capacity to speak fluent English.

The Big Fat Indian Wedding

2

The only ASAP task on the mind of a family after a child hits 25 is summarised by this one word – “shaadi”. For us girls, it’s sometimes even worse, “22 ki ho gaye!! Shaadi karlo.” All life parents stop us from talking to the strangers, but we often marry a complete stranger, chosen by our parents.

Amazing India: Taj Mahal, Dabbawalas, and jugad

The mixture of culture from Persian architecture, romantic landscape to a smartly created chain of Dabbawalas to deliver food and the mind which can work out solutions in any situation (jugad) are seen in India only!

The Joint Family and “Parivaar”

Mere cousins har continent me hai“, We may not know our next door neighbour, but we sure as hell know the fifth cousin brother of the third aunt who’s living next to the seventh uncle in Australia. The who’s who of the family is a trivia that all Indians are aware of. Therefore, we have houses across the world, my brother asks me, that is why PM says, “Vasudev Kutumbkam”. Because the family is everywhere!

Stereotypes

anigif_enhanced-15271-1410505838-1

The Indian parameters of measuring success is often determined by the bank balance one can present. Be it comparatives with Sharma-Ji’s son, or generic life goals that begin and end in IIT or Medical, India is a country where stereotypes are as common as the people.

Regardless of these subtle generalisations, we are marked by a nation that has faith. Despite corruption, lack of ‘n’ number of schools, or even red tapism, we have faith in the democratic process, and the institution of our democracy. A true embodiment of unity in diversity, we’re unique in our own ways. Here’s to embracing uniqueness and celebrating yet another year of freedom. Happy Independence Day!
