Growing population & corruption main hindrances to good

governance: Dattu New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) Growing population and corruptionare the two main hindrances in the way of good governance anddevelopment of the country, NHRC Chairperson Justice HL Dattusaid here today. "There has been some progress in bringing transparency ingovernance and fighting the simpler forms of corruption butdeep-seated organized political or systematic corruption canparalyse a nation," he said. Dattu was addressing the inaugural session of a two-dayseminar on "Good governance, development and human rights",organized by NHRC in collaboration with the National LawUniversity at its campus here. "The best way to combat corruption is that thegovernments must strive to rid themselves of corruption andbribery. They should become accountable and transparent inorder to preserve the integrity of democracy," he added. The NHRC Chairperson said that corruption typicallydiverts funding from state budgets which should be dedicatedto the full realisation of all human rights. "We need to promote more researches for finding tenablesolutions to end the menace of corruption. Without achievingcertain optimum standards of efficiency, it would be difficultfor the country to reach the 17 new sustainable developmentsgoals set by United Nations for overall improvements ofsociety," he said. "A country cannot be considered having good governance,if the people of that country are corrupt and the populationgrows rapidly. Corruption destroys economic foundations,impedes the ability of developing countries to attract foreigninvestment," he added. The seminar divided into various academic and thematicsessions will be addressed by several prominent speakers toidentify the areas of concerns impeding good governance andrealisation of human rights for all.
